Second grade carries the desire for each student to succeed and reach full potential. During the school year, students gain more confidence by becoming better listeners and through the development of leadership skills. These skills result in greater participation in class discussions, and great pride in our work. Student handwriting continues to improve, and robust vocabulary and creativity matures. Writing for different purposes and audiences results in interesting and meaningful essays. Organization, voice, and sentence fluency are some elements of effective writing that are stressed in 2nd grade. In addition to writing, reading goals are assessed each month to monitor individual success and expand reading skills.
Math curriculum in 2nd grade builds an understanding of place value, representation, and relationships of numbers to one thousand. We learn about linear measurement, time, and relate geometric ideas to numbers. Problem solving skills begin to develop. In second grade, the goal is to teach children to understand relationships and how math surrounds us every day!
Of course, this is just a hint of the daily learning in second grade. Our classroom has an open door policy and is available to visit. We love guests and are committed to continue building a fine community.
