Middle School – Literature and Language Arts
My ultimate goal in Language Arts and Literature is to create life-long readers and writers. I am passionate about connecting with my students and helping them to discover themselves through reading and writing. Classroom discussions ensue daily and the students enjoy working in pairs and small groups in addition to whole group and individually.
Through the middle school curriculum we focus on our understanding of the English language and how to manipulate it effectively through different writing styles. Report writing, essay writing, letter writing, and of course creative writing are some of these styles.
Good writing is achieved through an understanding of the parts of speech and sentence structure. These concepts are covered continuously throughout the year. Student understanding is best achieved when their own writing is used as an example. For that reason, all of our students have a portfolio. This contains their goals, best writing, reflections, and graphs. Students know where their weaknesses are and what they need to do in order to see improvement.
We have five classroom rules, but one of them says it all: “Always do your BEST!”
